An exquisite piece of Maiolica pottery featuring the Arabesco Deruta design on this mug.
The Arabesco design dates back to the 17th century and features flowing floral patterns, scrolls and a bird sitting amongst the branches.
Made in Deruta using Italian clay, it is carefully prepared and shaped by hand using a potter’s wheel or mould to form the item. The raw clay item is left to air-dry for 20 days before being fired at over 1000°C and left to cool in the kiln for over 24 hours to produce the porous ‘biscuitware’.
The next step in this highly complex process is to coat the ‘biscuitware’ in a mineral glaze to make the piece impermeable and to produce a gleaming white background. Traditionally tin was used as the glaze.
Once the glaze has dried the item is ready for painting. Each piece of earthenware is hand painted by a skilled painter using their steady hand and generations of experience to produce the vibrant and eye catching designs. The finished painted pieces are then glazed and fired for a second time at over 900°C. The heat changes the paint’s colours on the pottery to reveal its final transformation.
This time consuming production method and beautiful designs make Deruta pottery unique, rare and precious.
